Upper Subansiri district General information


Upper Subansiri is an district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The district headquarters is located at Daporijo. The district occupies an area of 7032 km² and has a population of 54,995 (2001 census).

Geography

Lying between latitude 27o 45' N and 28o 42' N and longitude 93o 18' E and 94o 36' E, and bounded by McMohan line boundering Tibet in the north, part of Lower Subansiri and part of  West Siang in the south, West Siang District in the east and Lower Subansiri district in the west, Upper Subansiri District has an approximate area of 7000 Sq. KM.


People

Four major tribes inhabit the Upper Subansiri District, namely, the Tagin, the Hill Miri, the Nyishi, and the Galo. There is a close co-relation among the four tribes so far as their socio-economic aspects are concerned. All the four tribes live in a well knit social pattern. Most of their traditions and customs have been handed down from generation to generation orally. Over the centuries these are being practised with great devotion.


Festival

It is invariably seen that the Sun, the Moon, the Earth and the natural elements around them play a vital part in their day to day social and religions particularly while celebrating festivals.

It is with these factors in background that their important festivals are performed. There are four main festivals. They are 1) Si-Donyi, 2) Boori Boot Festival 3) Boori Yullow Festival and 4) Mopin Festival.


Tourist Place

The rugged mountains with rocky tops are an ideal place for hiking, trekking, rock climbing, etc. The Subansiri River and its cascading tributaries meandering through out the district provide an  ample opportunity for white water sports like, Rafting, Angling, Boating etc. in winter season.


1. Angling: Throughout the Subansiri River.

2. Rafting: From Nacho to entire course of river.

3. Trekking, Hiking & Rock-climbing, etc: Taliha, Nacho and its nearby villages.
