Saharsa distrit General information
Saharsa district is one of the districts of Bihar, and Saharsa town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Saharsa district is a part of Kosi Division.
History
Earlier Saharsa district was within Bhagalpur Division. Kosi Division was formed on 2nd October 1972 comprising of Saharsa, Purnia and Katihar district with its head quarters at Saharsa. Similarly a new Civil Sub-Division Birpur was created on 01.12.1972. Consisting of 24 development Blocks viz. Raghopur, Chhatapur, Basantpur and Nirmali which were previously under supaul subdivision of this district. Two new districts Madhepura & Supaul have been formed from Saharsa district on 30.04.1981 and 1991. Saharsa district now consists of 2 subdivisions, viz. Saharsa Sadar and Simri Bakhtiarpur. The district consists of 10 development blocks and anchals each.
Geography
The place surrounded on the west by the river Kosi. Koshi boasts an abundance of fish and makhana. Saharsa is famous for its varieties of Mango's and Summer Berry known as Litchi.
The great saint "Shree Shree 108 Paramhans Goswami Laxminath" was born in Parsharma (Saharsa). His big ashram is located in Bangaon and know as Babajee Kuti. The Matasya Gandha temple in the north corner of saharsa is established by the D.M Tej Narayan Lal Das. Every year,there is a fare organized in the Patel Maidan and stadium in nov-december month. There is a famous temple of Kali. The language that is mainly spoken in Saharsa is Urdu, Maithili and Hindi. Saharsa is a Headquarters of Koshi commissionary. Koshi commissionary has three districts namely Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.
