Raigarh district General information
Raigarh district is situated in the easternmost part of newly created Chhattisgarh state. The district lies between latitude 21°22’- 22°42’ North latitude and 82°55’ to 83°49’ East longitude covering an area of 6530 sq.kms. It is surrounded by Sarguja and Jashpur districts in north, Orissa in the east, Mahasamund district on the the south Korba and Janjgir-Champa districts in the west. Topographically, the district varies from the lofty forest clad plateau of Pandrapat and Khuria in the north to the treeless deary,dusty plains of Raigarh and Sarangarh in the south.The rivers of the district comes under two drainage system,the Mahanadi and the Subarnrekha.Of these,Mahanadi is the major basin.The principal tributaries of the Mahanadi are Mand,the Kelo and the Ib The district is divided into 9 tehsils and 9 blocks for its administrative functioning and revenue collections. Raigarh town is the district Headquarters.According to the 2001 Census the total population of the district is 12,65,084 comprising 6,33,993 males an 6,31,891 females. The density of population is 179 persons per sq.km.The net sown area of the district is 282400 ha and net irrigated area is 35000 ha.The forests cover 32% of the geographical area of the district.
Raigarh is well known for Dhokra Casting. It is an art of producing metalware by the process of hot wax casting.
The Raigarh district is a producer of two types of silk namely Tasar Silk and Malburry Silk. Based an kosa silk, many villagers are running units for producing kosa sarees and dress materials of export quality.

Ram Jharna: Lord Ram is believed to have drunk from this natural spring, about 18 km from Raigarh. Ram Jharna is a popular picnic spot.
Gomarda Reserve Forest: This 278 sq km forest, about 60 km from Raigarh, in Sarangarh, is home to tigers and bears.
Chakradhar Samaroh: This music festival, is organised by the Ustad Allaudin Khan Sangeet Academy and the Chakradhar Lalit Kala Kendra, to commemorate the memory of Maharaja Chakradhar Singh.
