Kupwara district General information
Kupwara District is located in Jammu and Kashmir. District Kupwara was carved out form erstwhile District Baramulla in the year 1979. The District Headquarter "Kupwara" is situated at a distance of 90 kms from the summer capital of state, i.e. Srinagar. The north west part of the District is bound by line of actual control (L.O.C)) while the southern portion is bound by the District Baramulla. The district consists of three tehsils namely, Kupwara, Handwara and Karnah. The district is located between 34.17 to 34.21 East latitude and 73.10 to 73.16 north longitude.
History
District Kupwara was originally part of erstwhile undivided district Baramulla. District Kupwara was carved out of district Baramulla in July 1979. Kupwara town was chosen as district headquarter. The district consists of three tehsils namely, Kupwara, Handwara and Karnah.
BOUNDARIES
This lovely district is located in the extreme north-west of Kashmir valley. Its northern and western borders form the line of control between India and Pakistan and eastern and southern borders touch Sopore, Bandipore and Baramulla Tehsils. Famous river Kishan Ganga separates Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir in Machil, Keran and Teetwal areas.
People of this district have a painful experience of partition of India and unnatural division of the state . There are numerous examples whereby the LOC separates brothers from sisters, sons from mothers, wives from husbands and kiths and kin's. The trauma of the separation is still very painful.

Muqam-e-Shahwali - Mazar-e- sharief of Zattishah: At Village Mugamnear Drugmulla four Kms from Kupwara Town.Urs is celebrated in the month of May.
Ziarat -i- Baba Abdullah Gazi: Situated at Kralpora guzrail about 20 Kms from Kupwara town in the northwest.
Shrine of Prakash Akhoon: Located at Gushi 3 Kms from Kupwara town. Prakash pandit was a prominent scholar of Arabic,Persian, Urdu and Sanskrit languages.
Kheer Bhawani Asthapan: Located at Tikker on chowkibal road about 1 Km from Kupwara town. Anniversary is celebrated in the month of April-May.
