Pakaur district General information

Pakur is the district headquarters of Pakur District, Jharkhand state, India.

Area Location and Population

It is located in the north east corner of Jharkhand State: at 23°40' to 25°18' latitude and 86°25' to 87°57' E. longitude. Pakur is bordered by Sahibganj district in North, Dumka district in South, Godda district in West and Murshidabad district (of the West Bengal) in the East. Pakur has an area of about 696 square kilometers and a population of 700,032 (2001 Census).

Demography

As of 2001[update] India census, Pakur had a population of 36,014. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Pakur has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 55%. In Pakur, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Traditionally, Pakur has been the land of Santhals and Paharias adivasis. However, over a period of time, demographic composition has gradually changed and the local folks have come to the mainstream of the Indian society.

Economy

The economy of the district is predominantly agricultural. The district is also endowed with mineral wealth like coal, china clay, fire clay, and silica. However, infrastructural constraints have inhibited the growth of mining and allied industries. One of the main businesses of the city is mining and crushing.It is also known for the manufacturing of Crushing and screening equipments.It is also the place where the first indigenous crusher manufacturing unit was found in 1928 and is still functional in the name of Agarwalla Crushers.

Tourist Place

Siddhu Kanhu park

This location has its own historical values which talks about the Santhal warrior who bravely fought against the British, Tyrant Jamindars, and Banias and now the main feature to this spot could be the Martello Tower which was built by the British rulers of Pakaur to protect these Santhal attacks those days and it is located at the back of SDO Bungalow as of today.

Nityakali Mandir

Located just 2 km from the district headquarters this temple of holistic values is dedicated to Goddess Kali and it was built by the Pakur raj family those days, this evokes great values of Indian architectural designs and structure to the temple.

Shiv Sheetla Mandir

This is another oldest temple in the state which speaks about the serenity of Lord Shiva and Shakti, these are the deities that being worshipped here.

Sidpur

This hot spring location is situated 8 km from the district headquarters has its religious values and importance to Sapa Hore tribes, Pakaur is about 80 km south of Sahibganj.

Kanchangarah

This spot is situated 18 km from Litipara which has its own significance by nature and landscape, the places around are green and bliss in nature , especially the landscape by nature  is oval in shape wherein it produces an unusual echo is the highlight of this spot .the place is said to be the seat of Paharia Dynasty.

Birkitti

This is another location that reveals the pre historic stories about the battle between the rajput chief raja Udit Narayan Singh and Nabab Murshid Kuli Khan of Murshidabab during the early 18th century periods, today it is a tourism spot with the exhibits of the balance ruined forts are still found here.

Devinagar

Located 16 km from the district headquarters. This spot contains the remains of temples and houses built by local raja Udit Narayan Singh, the ruined tunnel which connects this place to the village Birkitti will be an added tourist visiting spot here.

Diwan-e-Pir

This location is a holy spot for the Muslims located near the Pakur railway station.

Dharni-Pahar

Situated 15 km from the district headquarters, you have an old temple of Lord Shiva at the Hilltop and this place is also famous for the annual fair which is held here during the Maha Shivrathri.
