Purbi Singhbhum district General information
East Singhbhum is one of the twenty-two districts of Jharkhand. East Singhbhum District is situated at the extreme corner of the southeast of Bihar, now Jharkhand. It has been formed after isolating 9 blocks from greater Singhbhum on 16th January 1990. The literal meaning of Singhbhum is land of lions. East Singhbhum district has a leading position in respect of mining and other industrial activities in Jharkhand state. Jamshedpur, a leading industrial city of India, is the district headquarters.
Division
district has been divided into two Sub-Divisions namely (1) Dhalbhum and (2) Ghatshila. The district consists of total nine block e.g. Golmuri cum Jugsalai (Jamshedpur), Potka & Patamda (In Dhalbhum Sub-Division) and Ghatshila, Musabani, Dumaria, Baharagora and Chakulia ( In Ghatshila Sub-Division).There are 150 panchayats and 1770 Revenue Villages.
Tourist Place
Jublee Park : A circular lake known as the Bagkudar Lake in the vicinity of the court buildings at Jamshedpur was a beauty spot. In 1937 , a beginning was made to develop a central park under the guidance of Mr. S. Percy Lancaster. The project was resumed in August 1955
TATA Zoological Park : Just besides the Jubilee park there lies the Zoological Park, which has been established by TATAs. The park has a beautiful lake, which has the provision for boating. The migratory birds fly in during the winter.
TELCO Bhuwaneswari Temple : This temple is located at a height of 500 ft approximately. People visit this place to worship Ma Bhuwaneswari. This temple is approximately 15 Kms from Sakchi Busstand and the same distance from Tatanagar Railway
Dimna Lake - 16 K.M TATA Steel has constructed Dimna Lake in the Mirzadih panchayat of Patamda Block. This lake is near to the Dalma Wild life Sanctuary and is quite attractive having t he facility for boating. Tourists visit this lake especially during November to February. Even the t ourists keep on visiting this place during the other months too. The accessibility to this lake becomes easier via Jamshedpur.
Kankadhasa (Dalma) – 18 K.M Late Sanjay Gandhi inaugurated Dalma Wild Life Sanctuary in the year 1975. On the top of Dalma hill Guesthouses of forest department and TISCO are located. Further there is a Shiva temple for the Hindus, which becomes an eyecatcher during the Hindu festival "Shiv Ratri". From the top of this hill during night Jamshedpur City has an appearance similar to that of twinkling stars. The "Sangam" of Subarnarekha River and Kharkai River presents a joyful sight from the top of this hill.
Lawajoda Temple - 09 K.M There are many sculptures and stones of mythologocal importance of 9th and 10th Century found in villages of Lawajoda, Bhula and Muni. At Lawajoda village there is a sculpture depicting a God drving an elephant. Villagers have got a firm belief in this holy place which has got mythological importance for Hindus.
Budha-Bidhi Hill This is small dense forest is the right to be enjoyed by peace loving persons.
Shabar Nagar Shabar Nagar of Potka lies in the Jamdih Panchayat at a distance of 18 Km from Potka Block headqaurter and is at a height of 70-80 Mts above sea level. On the top this there is approximately 250 acres of plane land. Around 70 families of Sabar Tribes are setlled at this place. To facilitate the education and bring up socially, the Sabar tribe, welfare department of Government has set up a High School with Hostel facility at this place.
Harina Shiva Temple : This place is approximately 29 Kms from Potka Block Headquarter. There is a famous Shiva Linga which is worshipped on the last day of the month of Jyastha. According to legend, on this day a number of Shiva linga spring up from ground near the original Shiva linga and disappear. On this occasion a fair is held which lasts for three days.
Rankini Temple : This place is situated in Bansila Gram Panchayat of Potka block. The temple of Rankini, it is said was formerly situated on a rock where human sacrifices used to be offered to her, the belief being that the Goddess herself killed the victims. The priests during those days mainly hailed from Bhumij Caste. Tourists visiting Ghatshila definitely visit this temple which is located in dense forest. This temple is also know as Kapadgadhi Ghat.
Water Fall : At Dharagiri, 6 miles north of Ghatshila there is a water fall 20 feet high, the legend about which is that the flow of the water is diverted if any man whose mother is not chaste places his head under it.
Panch Pandav : Three miles north west of Ghatshila, at a place called Panch Pandav, a stone can be seen bearing the figures of five men; the legend is that they are figures of the five Pandav brothers.
Gotashila Mountain : On this mountain there is located an ancient Shiva Temple. In the month of July special Puja is being are being offered to Lord Shiva on this mountain. This mountain has a natural waterfall. The approximate distance of this place from Block Head Quarter is 35 Kms.
Kanhaiswar Mountain : Kanhaiwswar Mountain has a beautiful Shiva Temple inside it among the dense forest. The natural forest gives an vegetative look of this temple. The temple is located at a distance of 20 Km from Chakulia Block Headquarter.
Chitreshwer Shiv Mandir - 12 K.m The Chitreswar Temple is located in the village Chitreswar which is about 35 miles from the Chakulia Railway Station. A big mela is held on the day of Shiva Chaturdasi. There is an old temple where Lord Shiva worshipped. About 10000 people from contiguous localities and also from the bordering villages of the Medinapur (West Bengal) and Mayurbhanj (Orissa) districts congregate. It is a very popular mela.
