Haveri district General information
Haveri is a district in the state of Karnataka. Haveri District is exactly in the centre of Karnataka with equal distance from Bidar in the far norh to Kollegal in far south. Haveri district consists of seven taluks namely Hanagal, Shiggaon, Savanur, Haveri, Byadagi, Hirekerur, Ranebennur. It is bounded by Dharwad district on the north, by Gadag district on north east, by Bellary district on East, by Davangere district on south, by Shimoga district on southwest and by Uttar Kannada on west and north west. Before it was made a separate district, it was part of Dharwad District. Haveri is 335 km from Bangalore.
Haveri is the administrative and political Head Quarters of the District, whereas Ranebennurin the south is a business hub. The important towns/villages in Haveri District are:
Haveri situated by the Pune - Bangalore National Highway No. 4. It is the seat of the sub divisional Revenue Officer and Head Quarter of other important office like, E. E. , K. E. B., & P W D and Sub Divisional Agricultural Officer etc. it has an Arts, Science and Commerce College housed on a spacious site and in an important building by the N H - 4. A Sugar Factory has recently started near Sangur, on the way to Hangal from Haveri. There is a Tiles Factory situated in the heart of the Town. Haveri is proud of its biggest Cattle market which is provided with all the amenities to the cattle and also the dealers. The APMC Yard is very big and caters to the needs of the surrounding agriculturists. The Head Post Office here has come in to being w.e.f. 02.06.80.
History
Haveri district has a very rich culture and tradition. The district is proud to be the birth place of Santa Shishunala Sharif, great saint Kanakadasaru, Sarvagnya, Hanagal Kumara Shivayogigalu, Wagish Panditaru, Writer Galaganatharu, Ganayogi Panchakshari Gavayigalu, Gnyana Peetha Awardee Dr.V.K.Gokak and many more. The freedom fighter Mailara Mahadevappa, who resisted British rule, is from Motebennur in Haveri District. Another freedom fighter Gudleppa Hallikere a native of Hosaritti is also from this district. He started a residential school Gandhi Grameen Gurukul in Hosaritti.
Haveri district along with Gadag district was earlier part of undivided Dharwad district. Owing to the demands of the people Haveri district was carved out of old Dharwad district and was formed on 24.08.1997.
History of Haveri district dates to pre-historic period. Evidences are available on existence of pre-historic civilizations on the Tungabhadra and Varada river basins. Stone carvings depicting Stone Age civilizations are found in many parts of the district. About 1300 stone writings of different rulers like Chalukyas, Rastrakutas are found in the district. Though none of the major kingdoms of Karnataka had their headquarters in Haveri, many Mandaliks ruled in this district.
Bankapura Challaketaru, Guttavula Guttaru, Kadamba of Hanagal and Nurumbad are some of the well known Samanta Rulers. Devendramunigalu the teacher of Kannada Adikavi Pampa and Ajitasenacharya the teacher of Ranna Chavundaray lived in Bankapura. This was also the second capital of Hoysala Vishnuvardhana. Guttaru ruled during latter part of 12th century and up to end of 13th century from Guttavol (Guttal) village as Mandaliks of Chalukya, independently for some time and as Mandaliks of Sevuns of Devagiri. Shasanas found in Choudapur, a village near Guttal, reveal that Mallideva was Mandalika of 6th Vikramaditya of Chalukyas. Jatacholina, under the leadership of Mallideva built the Mukteshwar temple at Choudapur. Kadambas of Nurumbad during the period of Kalyana Chalukyas ruled about 100 villages with Rattihalli as their capital. Kadambeshwar temple at Rattihalli is a beautiful Chalukya style temple.
All these Samantas who ruled from different parts of the district have left their permanent evidences in the history of the district. Many beautiful temples like Tarakeshwar at Hanagal, Kadambeshwar at Rattihalli, Someshwar at Haralahalli, Nagareshwar at Bankapur, Mukteshwar at Choudapur, Siddheshwar at Haveri, Eeshwar at Galaganath, Jain Basadi at Yalavatti depict the rich culture and history of the district.
Crops & Rivers & Minerals
Agriculture being the main occupation in the district, of the 485000 hectare of the geographical area of the district 360030 hectare is cultivated. Jawar, Cotton, Rice, Chilies, Gram, Groundnut, sunflower, sugarcane, and oilseeds are the major crops of the district. Varada, Kumadhvati, Dharma and Tungabhadra are the main rivers of the district. Apart from sand and building stones no other mineral ores are found in the district.
Educational institutes
There are two major colleges in Haveri. One is Gudleppa Hallikeri College, another is C. B. Kolli Polytechnic. A new government engineering college is proposed which is expected to start in the 2008 academic year.
Among other colleges are S. S. Women's Degree College, SJM Pre-University College, and SMS Pre-University College.
Recently Govt. Engineering College was started.
Places of interest
RANEBENNUR is also one of the important Taluka Head Quarter in the Division. It is the most populous Town in the Division. It has got a good well equipped Arts, Science and Commerce College. A Technical Engineering College has been recently started. A few Tiles manufacturing factories are situated in the outskirts of the Town. The Town is on the Highway to Bangalore. This is an important trading Centre and is famous for the country wool rugs [Kambli ].
Near Ranebennur is situated Devargudda, at a distance of 12 Kms. The presiding deity here is Malhari Martand worshipped by crores of people. The Temple is situated on a hill and is beautifully lit during nights. It is visible from longer distances while travelling on NH-4.
Near Ranebennur, a Bird Sanctuary is located near Medleri Forest Area. In this area, the Birds known as " Black Bustard " are available. In the same forest, '"Black Deers" are also available. In Kannada, the Black Bustard is called as " ERALADDU" in Northern Part and " DOORSVAYANA HAKKI " in Southern part. This Sanctuary is drawing the attention of the bird - lovers - conservationist those remotely interested in nature particularly due to this majestic bird. A big Bustard can reach up to 122 centimeters in height and the smaller 92 centimeters.
Near Haveri Anandavana Agadi is famous. Here, Sheshachal Swamy lived and took Samadhi about four centuries ago. There is a beautiful Shiva Tample here and annual fair is organised on a grand scale. Within the campus, A Samskrit School is run by the Present Swamiji. A monthly magazine by name ' Subhoda Chandrike' is printed and published here.
kaginelli : Nine miles West of Haveri, kaginelli is on the way to Hirekerur. It is a historic place, being the death place of Sri Kanakadas, the noted Kannada Post. There is the Adikeshva Temple here and it is this presiding diety which gave all the push to Kanakadas in his famous writings.
HANUMANAMATTI, there is a Rural Agriculture Institute which is intended for improvement of villages ans village - industries. This is situated between Haveri and Ranebennur by the NH-4.
KUMARPATNAM is the new name given to the original village Nalavagal. The Harihar Ployfiber.a huge Birla concern with a cost [ outlay ] of Rs. 40 crores, is humming with all the activities. It is situated on the bank of River Tungabhadra and employs 2,500 people.
BYADAGI is Taluka Head Quarters of the Taluka by the same name. Famous Byadagi Chillies are from this place only. During season, the Telegraph Branch o the Post Office is under heavy pressure.
HANGAL is the Taluka Head Quarters of the Taluka by the same name. The taluka isfamous rice growing area. There are full fledged Arts, Commerce colleges in this Town. Sri Tarakeshwara Temple is famous here. Newly built I. B. is available at this place.
HIREKERUR is head Quarter of the taluka by the same name. There is a full - fledged Arts, College in the Town. There is Inspection Bungalow in the Town.
