Udupi district General information
Udupi District in the Karnataka state of India was created in August 1997. The three northern taluks, Udupi, Kundapur and Karkal, were separated from Dakshina Kannada District to form Udupi district. The administrative headquarters of Udupi district is Udupi.
The primary languages of Udupi district are the Tulu language and the Konkani language. The Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts are sometimes referred to as Tulu Nadu, as they constitute the Tulu-majority region.
Some inscriptions in the Tulu languages are found in and around the village of Barkur. The ruins and inscriptions are in need of being preserved.
Udupi restaurants that are popular all over India and have found its way into other countries also. Udupi restaurants are typically south Indian vegetarian restaurants.
The famous Sri Krishna temple is located in Udupi. Udupi is the place where Sri Madhwacharya,one of the greatest proponents of the Vaishnava faith began his philosophical journey
Kuthpady is known for the Subramanya temples, which are visited every year thousands of pilgrims during Subramanya Shrasthi, which falls in Nov-Dec. It is also home to Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara Temple (Kanangi Temple)Satyayuga Yogashrama and Ramakrishna Bhajana Mandira.
Climate
The climate in Udupi is hot in summers and pretty good in winter. During summers(from March to May) the temperature reaches up to 40°C and in winters (from December to February) it is usually between 32°C and 20°C.
The Monsoon period is from June to September with average rainfall and heavy winds.
Language
Tulu is the most widely spoken language in Udupi. A dialect of Kannada which is exclusively spoken in Kundapur is Kundagannada. Apart from this the other languages are Kannada, Konkani, Nawayath, and Beary bashe spoken by Bearys.
Economy and industry
Udupi is becoming a major city of Karnataka. People here have the highest average per-capita income in Karnataka according to a recent survey by a private firm.[citation needed]. Poverty rate in Udupi is fairly low when compared to Bangalore and other districts of Karnataka. People in Udupi lead a high standard of life.
Udupi is also the birth place of the Syndicate Bank and Corporation Bank. Udupi's economy depends mainly on agriculture and fishing. Small-scale industries like the cashew industry, and other food industries and milk cooperatives are the most prominent. There is no large-scale industry in Udupi. The Karnataka Government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Cogentrix Light and Power Industry to set up a thermal power plant in the district at Nandikur. However, because of stiff opposition from citizens and environmentalist groups, the project has been temporarily suspended. An attempt by the Nagarjuna Power Corporation to set up a similar plant at nearby Padubidri also met strong opposition.
Udupi is also home to a well-known software company Robosoft Technologies, which is into product development for the Mac OS and Windows platforms. It is located at New Udupi(Santhekatte, Kallianpur). The company has brought Udupi a significant place in the global IT scenario.
Places of Interest
SRI KRISHNA MUTT: Udupi is famous for its Sri Krishna Mutt which though small is quite beautiful. There is no front door for this mutt. Instead there is a small window through which one could always get the darshana of the idol from outside the mutt. In front of the window there is a small 'gopuram'. The main entrance to the mutt is on the southern side. As on enters, on the right side is a tank called Madhwa Pushkarani. This tank has stone steps all round and a mantapam in the center
