Zunheboto district General information

Zunheboto is a district of Nagaland state in India. It is bordered on the east by Mokokchung District, Kohima District in the south and Wokha District on the west. Headquarter is at Zunheboto.

Zunheboto is also the home to the Sumi Nagas, a warrior tribe of Nagaland. Head hunting was practiced extensively till the advent of the American missionaries who converted the warriors to Christians. Today the people are peaceful and hardworking, practicing agriculture as their main occupation. A hilly place, Zunheboto is covered by evergreen forests and surrounded by small streams and rivers. Today it is home to the Nagaland University whose campus is situated in the village of Lumami in the sub division of Akuluto. This has become the cultural center for the people of Nagaland, as all the Nagas irrespective of tribes come to study.

Location

A large area of the District is in the plains with an average elevation of 260 m above sea level excepting the Medziphema sub-division and a few villages of Niuland sub-division, which are located in the foothills. The total area of Dimapur is 927 Sq. Km(Source-Deptt. of Land Record & Survey). The district is bounded by Kohima District on the south and east; the Karbi Anglong and the DAB ( Disputed Area Belt ) stretch of Golaghat District of Assam, in the west and the north

Climate

Dimapur Climate is hot and humid in the plains during summer ( reaching a maximum of 36ºC , with humidity upto 93% ) while the winter months are cool and pleasant.The average annual rainfall is 1504.7 mm

Population

The District has a heterogeneous population with the majority comprising Naga tribes from all over Nagaland. The total population of the district is estimated at 3,08,382.

Education

The district has

Schools : 11 Government High Schools and a host of private Institutions including Delhi Public School, which has open recently.. The Sports Authority of India

Colleges : Dimapur Government College, Patkai Christian College; Public College of Commerce, S.D.Jain College, Pranabananda Women’s’ College, Salt Christian College are a few among the 18 different Colleges in Dimapur. Hostel accommodation is also available in few Colleges.

Vocational Centres : Women’s’ Industrial Training Institute (WITI) run by the Deptt.of Employment, besides many private IT institutions imparting vocational / skilled training.

Health

Rural : There are 27 health units under SDMO, Dimapur cover the entire rural population in the district.

Urban : Dimapur Civil Hospital under Medical Superintendent Town Dispensary Duncan Sub-Center Nagarjan S/C NAP Hospital, Chumukedima Railway Hospital, Dimapur Military Hospital, Rangapahar 500 bedded Referral Hospital, Dimapur - under construction; along with numerous private Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Clinics and specialized Diagnostic Centres offer Medical facilities in the urban areas. The Urban Malaria Scheme under the aegis of the NMEP offer facilities to all the public and to OPD and in-patients at the Civil Hospital, Dimapur, for Parasitological examination & treatment.
