Bargarh district General information

Bargarh District, also Baragarh District, is an administrative district of Orissa state in eastern India. The city of Bargarh is district headquarters.

Area

The district has an area of 5832 km², and a population of 1,345,601, with a population density of 231 persons per km². The district was carved out of the erstwhile district of Sambalpur. All-season irrigation from Hirakud dam on the Mahanadi River makes the northern half of Bargarh District rich in agriculture, mostly rice.

Subdivision

Bargarh district has 12 blocks. Some of them are Barpali, Padmpur, and Bhatli.

Specialization

The district is famous for a 10-day long open-stage drama, Dhanuyatra, based on the life and times of Lord Krishna, culminating in the death of King Kansa. It is also famous for centuries old handloom industry manufacturing a trade-mark textile form called Sambalpuri.

Language

The people speak Sambalpuri, a dialect of Oriya. There is a 13th century temple at Nrusinghnath where, as the only instance of its kind in the world, Lord Vishnu is worshiped in a feline incarnation.

Forest

Consequent upon reorganisation of Forest Department, Bargarh Forest Division has come into force with effect from Ist October, 2003 vide Resolution No. 13228 dated 8th  August, 2003 of Government of Orissa, Forest & Environment Department. After reorganisation Padampur Range of Padampur Revenue Sub-Division &  Bhatli and Kamgaon Range of Bargarh Revenue Sub-Division have been merged in this division being separated from the Khariar Forest Division and Sambalpur Forest Division respectively. Presently the Forests of Bargarh Revenue District is controlled by the Divisional Forest Officer, Bargarh Forest Division, Hirakud Wild Life Division & Sambalpur (South) Forest Division. Out of the total geographical area of 5834.0 Sq.km the forest cover is 1216.13 Sq.K.M. only which constitutes 20.84 %. Out of the 1216.13 Sq.K.M. forest area, 852.21 Sq.K.M. is under the administrative control of this division. Balance 354.40 Sq. K.M. is under the administrative control of Hirakud Wildlife Division and 9.52 Sq.K.M. is under the administrative control of Sambalpur South Division.

istrict Industries center is functioning with effect from 07.01.2007 to look after promotion of micro, small, medium enterprises  (MSME), implementation of PMRY, Rural Artisan on cottage and handicraft sector, REGP under OKVIB in the revenue District of Bargarh.
