Sonapur district General information
Sonepur District, also called Sonapur District or Subarnapur District, is an administrative district of Orissa state in eastern India. The town of Sonepur is the district headquarters.
Subarnapur, the City of Temples is situated between 20o30'N to 21o11'N latitude and 83o27'E to 84o16'E longitude. The district spreads over an area of 2284.89 Sq. KM. It is also known as Second Varanasi of India for its cluster of temples having architectural importance and tantric mystiques. Subarnapur is also famous for handlooms, prawns, terracotta etc.
Geography
Sonepur is situated between 200 30' and 210 11' North latitude and 830 27' and 840 16' East longitude. Subarnapur District was created in Revenue & Excise Department Notification No.14218/R dt.27.3.1993. It was carved out from the undivided Bolangir District and started functioning w.e.f.1.4.1993 after inauguration of the District by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister, Sri Biju Pattnaik. The District spreads over an area of 2284.89 Sq.KM. with two Sub-Division namely Sonepur and Birmaharajpur and four Tahasil i.e. Sonepur, Binka, Rampur & Birmaharajpur.
Sonepur is situated on the confluence of river "The Mahanadi" and "The Tel". Geographically it is located on the western part of ORISSA. The town is dotted with temples and is known as Temple City. It is famous for silk handloom and is known as second BENARAS
Tourist Place
Binica's Papakshya Ghat : This ghat is the most famous tourist spot of Subarnapur. It is said that King Ananga BhimDev got cured from Leprosy after taking bath here.
Charda : It is situated at a distance of 4 km Binika. It is famous for Kapileswar temple.
Nabagrahakunda : It is famous for the stone images of Nabgraha carved on a big stone.
