North Tripura district General information
The North Tripura District has a geographical area of 2,469.90 Sq. Km and is divided into three sub-divisions, namely, Dharmanagar, Kanchanpur and Kailashahar. For the purpose of developmental activities it is divided into eight Blocks namely Kumarghat, Panisagar, Pecharthal, Kadamtala, Damcherra, Dasda, Gournagar and Jampui Hill.There are three Nagar Panchayats at Dharmanagar, Kailashahar and Kumarghat.Main tribes of the District are Tripuri, Koloi,Halam, Chakma.Two Hill ranges, namely Jampui, Sakan run almost parallal to each other in the District. "Betling Chip", the highest point of the state(939m. ht.), is located in the District in the Jampui range. Deo, Manu, Longai and Juri are the main rivers. Rock carvings and temples dating back to the 8th century are seen at "UNOKUTI" (about one less then one crore of God and Goddesses) situated at about 10 Km from the District Head quater.
Places of interest
Jampui hill : During November every year, the unique Orange & Tourism festival is celebrated in the Jampui hill. A large number of tourists, both domestic and foreign, participate and enjoy this festival. The rainy season is no less charming. During this season the hill is covered with floating clouds and it provides a rare experience for the tourists. The formation of clouds at the bottom of the hill range and its gradual ascendance from the bottom to the top slowly engulfing the whole hill range in its mystic lap is an experience to treasure.
The view of rising and setting sun from various view points in Jampui hills is a wonderful sight for the tourists. Tourists visiting the Jampui hill cannot afford to miss the view of the sunset and the sunrise. Various view points in the hill range provide excellent panoramic views of the valley and villages of Mizoram. From the watchtower at the highest peak, Betlingchip(3200 feet high), the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the Kanchanpur - Dasda valley other hill ranges of Tripura and Mizoram unfold an enigmatic scenic vista.
Unakoti: There is a profusion of rock-cut images, belonging to 11-12th century A.D. , intricate and finely executed. This is as such an open air art gallery. Truly, over the backdrop of widespread hill ranges, surrounded by lush green and bush, a large no. of colossal figures of Hindu gods & goddesses engraved in a 45 mtr. Hillock. The place is 8 KM from District hq. Kailashahar and 180 KM from capital Agartala. Behind the name Unakoti, i.e. short of one crore. According to mythology, the dawn broke out while the craftsman had just finished making of one crore images of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Hara-Gauri, Ganesh etc. Unakoti is termed as "Shaiva-Tirtha" which is visited by thousands of pious people from all over the region particularly during Ashokastami Mela in March-April to take a holy dip.
Laxmi-Narayan Tample : Icon of Lord Krishna was installed by Krishnananda Sevayet of Laxmi Narayan temple more than 45 years ago. The temple is also registered under Indian antiquitity act like monument. The main temple was constructed with some financial assistance of the royal family of Tripura. According to the legendary tale of the Bhagavata Tamal tree is closely associated with the life sport of Lord Krishna, probably considering this aspect, the sevayet planted Tamal tree in front of the temple about 35 years back. The branches of the Tamal tree have spreaded so nicely forming like a Canopy, which is indeed attractable.
Sateramia Hawar at Kailashahar : Marshy area fed by water of two streams namely, Jarail Cherra and Bagua Cherra, the water courses of the streams has met in the center of the field. It is said that 17 Moslems (Mia) was crossing this big water land by boat and their boats sank in the water, since then the area was known as Sateramiar Hawar, earlier it was full of aquatic trees. In winter swarms of migratory birds from Siberia visit this place. The forest dept. Govt. of Tripura proposed to make it bird centenary
Purano Rajbari, Rangauti at Kailashahar : According to the author of the book ‘RAJMALA’, Kaliprasanna Sen, Kailashahar was a prosperous janapath and also was the Capital of Tripura. According to him Maharaja Indramanikya built palace at Rangauti at Kailashahar. There is a large lake (Khowra bil) prevailing an area of 5 Sq. KM, which is known as Rajar Deghi, one can see well planed pole surrounding the tank. An old big banyan tree and this large lake attracts thousands of people from nearby regions.
Bhagabati mandir, Kumarghat : Founded in the year 1981 on the occassion of Shivachaturdashi. There is a Eco-Kid park, temple of god Shiva &an idol of Lord Buddha near the Bhabatarini Temple. Thousands of pious people from all over the region visits the temple during Shiva Chaturdashi and Kali Puja.
Udayan Buddha Bihar of Pechartal :Situated at Pecharthal market place adjacent to National High way NH44. Established in the year 1933. The idol is made of "Osto Dhatu" 8 types of metals, 4.5 ft. height and weighs 300 Kg. Hundreds of devotees from nearby land assembles in the time Buddha Jayanti in Buddha Purnima in the month April/May.
