Jaunpur district General information

Jaunpur district an ancient name Jagdamnipur is a district in Varanasi division of Uttar Pradesh state in India. Jaunpur town serves as the district headquarters.
Jaunpur is one of the larger districts in Uttar Pradesh and has the third largest population in the state.

History

This town is estd. in 14th century by Firoz Tuglak in the memory of Sultan Muhammad. The actual name of Sultan muhammad was Jauna Khan. He named this city Jaunpur. About 1394 AD Malik Sarvar estabilished Sharky empire. During his period a number of mosque constructed there.

Location

Jaunpur stands pretty in the south-eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. The district lies at a global location of 82.44º east longitude and 25.46º north latitude.

Jaunpur falls under the Varanasi Division of Uttar Pradesh. It covers a total area of 4,038sq.km. The population in the district of Jaunpur is 12, 74,839.
