Shrawasti district General information

Shrawasti District is one of the districts of the Uttar Pradesh state of India and Bhinga town is district headquarter.Shrawas ti district is a part of Devipatan Division.Shrawasti is a newly created district carved out from district Bahraich.Shrawasti shares its border with district Balrampur,Gonda and Bahraich.Bhinga, the District Headquarter of Shrawasti, is approximately 175 kilometres away from the state capital, Lucknow.Shrawasti, the northeastern district of Uttar Pradesh, is located near River Rapti. It is closely associated with the life of Lord Buddha. It is being said that the mythological king Sravast founded this town. Shrawasti was the capital of Kosala Kingdom during 6th century BC to 6th century AD.

AREA

The total forest area in Shravasti district is 34,238 hectare. This area is divided into six forest ranges for the purpose of management One of these four ranges falls in Shravasti forest division and 2 ranges falls in Sohelwa forest division.
The East Sohelwa and West Sohelwa are part of the Sohelwa wildlife sanctuary. It is governed by the Divisional Forest Officer, Sohelwa Wildlife Division, District - Balrampur (U.P.).

Percentage of forest area to total geographical area is 14.

FLORA

The area bears mainly Dry Sal forests. One of the main species of the area is Sal(Shorea Robusta). The other species found are - Sheesham, Jamun (Sizizium Cuminii), Rohini , Asana, Gutel, Haldu, Semal (Bombex Ceiba), Mahua (Mahuca Indica), Khair (Acacia Catechu), Bel (Agel Marmelos) etc. Teak plantations in large areas have been taken up during recent past.Apart from the above mentioned species, many shrubs, creepers and grasses are also found in this area.
